Wood Floor Knowledge

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

Wood flooring comes in many styles, finishes, and density. With so many choices it can become very confusing to choose the right floor for you. Here are some examples to think about when picking a new floor.

  • Type: Exotic, Solid, Engineered, Pre-finished, Unfinished
  • Style: Distressed, Hand scraped, Cabin/Country style, Raised grain, Wire scraped
  • Finish: High shine, Oiled finished, Satin finished, Gloss finished, Matte finished

You also have to consider the density of the wood that will best meet your needs. If you are going to have people walking in shoes, mostly heels than you will want a floor with high density. If your home is going to have light traffic with little dropped objects, than you will be able to use a medium or low density wood. The density rating is based on the Janka system. Woods such as Maple, Cherry, and Oak come in various densities, these can fit any situation. Bamboo is a great renewable product that can very in density, depending on the plant fibers.

Bring Some Light into the Bathroom

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

The bathroom is usually the last place you think about lighting. Normally you will see bathrooms with one single fixture responsible for the entire space, and it is usually located above the mirror. Although this is an easy method, it can cast shadows on your face while grooming. Try to avoid over head light and use vertical fixtures on both sides of the mirror. They should be mounted at eye level to eliminate shadows under the chin and nose.

In larger bathrooms make sure you use a dedicated light above the shower and tub. This will help keep the space evenly lit and give a warmer experience. Make sure to use glass fixtures as plastic ones will yellow with time.

To bring depth to the space, use a spot light. This will give a great focal point; try it on a piece of art or the vanity.

One great side benefit to better lighting is less cleaning. Mold and mildew grow in dark damp places. With the addition of better lighting and if possible natural light you will spend less time cleaning and more time relaxing.

Chic Kitchen with Recycled Countertops

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Green counter tops can be up to 85 percent recycled glass. They can be made to fit any shape, size, and/or color the customer likes. The process of making the countertops involve recycled glass, bonding agents or resins and if wanted addition stone to enhance the look.

Recycled counter tops have several benefits over stone tops. They are non-porous which means they never have to be sealed. Because of this you never have to worry that a spill left on the surface will soak in and stain the stone. When using these tops you will find that they are very simple to maintain and keep clean; you are also less likely to scratch the surface.

When designing your countertop you also can customize your back splash to match perfectly. Being able to use glass on both surfaces will help maintain cohesiveness and also give you a one of a kind look you won’t be able to find anywhere else in the industry.

How a Simple Plant Can Change Everything

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

Plants have several benefits when placed in the home. They can improve your overall design, enhance your mood, and even contribute to greater health for you and your family

There are a couple plants that can dramatically improve the oxygen level in your home. The Areca Palm and Mother – in – law’s Tongue both give off high volumes of oxygen. By keeping these plants around the house you can increase your daily level of energy and alertness. It is recommended to have three or four plants per person. This can be a little over whelming for the home, but, by placing a couple plants here and there you will be able to have a well designed area and also receive the benefits that these plants can give.

Several plants can actually increase the quality of your air. They will absorb your air and filter out the harmful VOC’s. Try placing some English Ivy, Asparagus Fern, and/or Purple Heart’s around your home and you will be amazed at how it can help.

These plants all have benefits and can be incorporated into almost any environment. They can give texture to a space as well as show depth in an otherwise flat portion of your room.

How Your Room Can Make You Happy

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Color has a major impact on your mood and thoughts. Color can also transform a rooms shape and size, so picking the appropriate color is very important. Each color has a great psychological impact on your mood. Depending on your room color you can go from calm tranquil feelings to aggressive rage. The amount of color in a room can also play a roll on how it affects your mood.

Colors fall into three basic categories: Active, Passive, and Neutral. The shades also have different expressions. Light colors are expansive and can make a room seem larger and brighter. Dark colors are warm and sophisticated but shrink a room.

  • Red: This color is best used in entry ways for a strong first impression or in spaces like living or dinning rooms. Red has been known to be a color that brings people together and spark stimulation.
  • Yellow: When used in kitchens, dinning rooms and bathrooms it can create a warm and inviting feeling. This color should only be used as an accent and not a main color. It has been shown that people lose their temper faster and babies cry more often when surrounded by yellow.
  • Blue: Blue is a cooling color that calms and relaxes the mood. This color is perfect for bedrooms and bathrooms; it also performs best when natural light is more available. The lighter the shade the better, light blues give off positive responses where as dark blues evokes sadness.
  • Green: This color is the easiest for the eye to see, because of this it is considered to be the most restful color. Green can be implemented in about every room of the house. Light and medium greens show the most response to releaving stress.
  • Purple: Due to its dark value purple should only be used as an accent or secondary color. Light purple should be used in bathrooms and bedrooms. Dark purple is a great way to get a section of a room to stand out.
  • Orange: Orange is the most energetic color of the bunch. Try to stay away from orange for bedrooms, but do utilize it for exercise or game rooms.
  • Neutrals (White, Gray, Brown, and Black): These are very flexible colors. The more neutrals you use the more you liven up a room. The less you use the more you calm a room down. Try to use these colors as an anchor to bring a room together.

You have to ask yourself what kind of atmosphere you would like to create. As a rule of thumb you should not exceed three or four colors  in a room.  If you are remodeling your whole room start with carpet and furniture, this has the most limited color palate. Then base to wall color off your selections.

Is the Weather Getting the Best of Your Floors

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Wood flooring responds to humidity variations. During warm and humid months wood expands. In the colder months, dry conditions force the wood to contract. This seasonal movement is normal for wood flooring, and the best way to reduce movement is by installing humidity controls.

Winter time

In the winter months homes are heated and the air is dry, wood flooring then starts losing its moisture. When this happens, thin gaps can appear between planks. This is normal, and you should be prepared for it to occur. Once indoor heating is turned off humidity levels will raise again, most of the gaps will close up.

To avoid these separations, try to control and monitor air humidity levels during the dry season by installing a humidifier. You can either install a furnace humidifier or bring a movable humidifier into a room that has good air circulation. Optimal humidity level falls in between 45%-60% range. As long as humidity does not fall lower than 45%, no gaps will appear.

Summer time

During warm and humid months, indoor humidity can rise up to 90%. Wood absorbs moisture from the air and expands as a result. Even just a few days of exposure to high humidity can cause wood flooring to cup. When a wood board cups, the edges are at a higher level than its center. Cupping can also happen when spilled water is absorbed by the wood. Once cupping has occurred, it takes a while for the wood to restore its internal moisture and flatten out.

When extensive moisture or humidity causes the wood to expand significantly, adjoining boards start pressing against each other. In extreme cases, this increased pressure can cause the affected boards to lose their structural integrity and crack. To avoid cupping, keep indoor humidity level in your home or job site (prior to hardwood installation) within 45-60% range. Never allow indoor humidity to rise over 65%. Maintain optimal humidity levels by keeping air conditioner or dehumidifier running during hot humid summer weather.

Moisture and Exotic Wood Species

Flooring manufactured from exotic wood species is more demanding than flooring made from domestic woods. For this reason, a set of additional requirements has to be met when installing and maintaining an exotic hardwood floor. Indoor air humidity level must be in the range of 50-70%, and air temperature must be kept in the range of 64 to 75 F.

In order to meet these requirements, use an air humidifier during the dry season, heat the room or use AC to maintain acceptable humidity during humid summers.

Crafty Tile Idea!

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

The Crow River Girl Scouts host a Holiday Shopping Mall every year as a community service project for the children in our area and as a troop fundraiser. Children from ages 3 to 10 are escorted by a Girl Scout to do shopping for parents, grandparents, siblings, etc. The children purchase items ranging from 50 cents to 5 dollars. All the items are wrapped and tagged before they leave. The children leave with such excitement of shopping without their parents and are anxious to give their gifts! FocalPoint is proud to a part of this event this year by donating some tile to a local St.Michael/Albertville Girl Scout troop. The troop took the tile and turned them into coasters. We heard back from the troop and they were a big success. They were a hot item and they sold every set. FocalPoint congratulates Girl Scout Troop 13502 for using their resources wisely.
