Expressing Yourself with Design

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

It seems that more and more homeowners are decorating and designing their homes from magazine cut outs and by what other people tell them. These sources may have good ideas and their designs work great, but you have to be careful not to fall into a trap of decorating your home to their taste.

If you’re trying to find a new trend to decorate with, make sure you’re really in love with the style. There is nothing worse than spend all the time and money on a space and then having it be un-functional and irritating to live in. Don’t be afraid to try new things, but don’t change a wall color because it looks good in a magazine even though you know it will be uncomfortable being surrounded by it every day.

Remember to scale your furniture to the room you are placing it in. Don’t buy a luxurious couch when you know it will either over power the room or it will be too small and insignificant. Remember that functional knickknacks are best and you should put away all the clutter that is just sitting around.

A harmonious balance between design and self-interest will bring about the best results.

New Year, New Trends

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

We have entered into a new year which means we will be seeing new styles and many changes.

Our Carpet One member stores are already seeing changes to their lines in terms of softness. Both the Tigressa and Innovia lines have utilized new technology and incorporated changes to their fibers. Innovia has introduced the Innotex fiber. This new fiber has silk intro-woven into its pattern to bring a new luxurious feel. Both new innovations will be available in the coming months.

One major trend we are seeing is hard surface flooring throughout the entire home. More builders and designers are limiting carpets and using lighter colored wood finishes to brighten the home. We are seeing great designs and colors being introduced into rugs, which really help to offset the hardness of the floor.

Designers are already predicting that this will be the year of cool neutrals and vibrant colors. Look for shocking statements in design with bold colored accessories and great focal wall design. The Color Collective has named Dutch Boys Jaded Janet at the color of 2013

Green Trends Still Rising

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012

If you have been looking around at stores like ours or have been shopping the market for a new home, you will notice that green building is on the rise. Manufactures are making it a lot easier to do your part for the environment while still staying in your cost bracket.

According to a new study green building and remodeling will make up 25 percent of the market this coming year. By 2016 green construction will make up 38 percent of the market. This will only lead to a more expanded green product line. We are seeing Mohawk do great work with eliminating the use of oil in their carpets. Companies like Mannington are also jumping into the ring with more renewable flooring materials.

When shopping for a cleaner home make sure you are getting products that are low or no VOC. You also want to move toward renewable products that will leave a smaller foot print. Manufactured items like carpet and paint are the easiest to find greener alternatives.

If you planning on buying a new constructed home look for the LEED certification. Homes earn points for every enviormently friendly product they use. Little things like land scaping and the position of the home as well as big things like framing and tankless water heaters will earn points.

Shedding Light on New Light Bulbs

Tuesday, November 13th, 2012

The world of light bulbs keeps changing. We have come a long way from the simple wire design that has a life span of a month. LED bulbs are expanding in technology and design. They are showing up in almost every store and more companies are jumping in on the action.

LED bulbs last longer and use less energy than their conventional counter part. LEB bulbs fit into conventional bulb sockets and almost all are dimmable. It seems to be a win-win at every angle.

The new bulb from Insignia has the potential to last 22 years and only cost $14-$17. It illuminates at 40 or 60 watts but might have a little BUZZ sound to it.

Insignia – LED Bulb

Switch Lighting came out with a liquid cooled LED bulb that last 25,000 hours. Sure, water and electricity usually don’t mix and why would you need a liquid cooled bulb. The question is why not! This bad boy looks cooler than your ordinary bulb and it does something almost every other electronic in your home doesn’t.

Switch Lighting – Liquid Cooled LED

If brighter is your goal, 100 watt bulbs are starting to roll into stores. Sylvania, Switch Lighting, and Philips all have 100 Watt bulbs that are able to use up to 85% less energy than conventional bulbs. Of course the spiral bulb that we have become custom to seeing is the cheapest version of the bunch.

New Trend in Porcelain Tile

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

Porcelain tile with a wood finish is starting to make a big impression for both Residential and Commercial settings. You get the look of wood that people have come to love without the hassle and maintenance of a real wood floor.

Don’t get us wrong, we love real wood floors, but it is not always ideal for all locations and lifestyles. Wood designed porcelain tiles are a new and fresh option for many people.

American Florim is one manufacture that has the “wood” tile look down to an art. As you can see here (Florimusa), the Forest line achieves a beautiful look with the high definition graphics on glazed porcelain. It comes in 5 different colors with coordinating wall base.

There are many reasons to choose impervious porcelain tile over other floor coverings. It offers the largest array of design options and holds its value the longest. In a comparison between the many different floor options, porcelain tile offers one of the most durable and least expensive options over the lifespan of the building.

Stop into one of our 3 locations to see the new trend in tile.  You’ll be glad you did!

Smartstrand is a Smart Choice

Friday, February 17th, 2012

The biggest fiber development in the last century has been the creation of Mohawk’s Smartstrand fiber.  This fiber features extreme stain resistance and incredible softness to give the consumer a carpet that meets their two most requested criteria.

SmartStrand is constructed of DuPont Sorona, a corn-based polymer that is a renewable source, making it good for Earth and your home. Many carpets are crafted of petroleum-based materials, Smartstrand is 37 percent sourced from rapidly renewable resources.

A great feature is the stain resistance the company has “woven right into the DNA of the carpet.” That means most spills can be cleaned up with simple water and more difficult messes requiring only mild dish washing soap.

Right now Karastan has 12 styles of carpet made with Smartstrand on sale through the end of the month.  Almost every style type is featured in these 12 products so now is the perfect time to come in and both see and feel the difference in this fiber! You should also start preparing now for Karastans annual spring sale April 18th to the end of May by coming in and getting your feet on this amazing product.

Unlike most retailers when you come into Focalpoint we take the rebate off before you pay. No need to spend your money and wait for months to receive it back.
